Job Description:

A CIFRE PhD position about Robust Assessment of the Impact of Climate Change on Aircraft Operational Performance is proposed in the In-Flight Performance & Operations team within Airbus Commercial Aircraft in Toulouse.

Mission of the team:

The Mission of the In-Flight Performance & Operations team is to model and evaluate the aircraft operational performance, analyze and simulate the aircraft mission and its environment. 

With a constant focus on safety, our role is to improve aircraft and associated services efficiency in order to keep answering our customers needs.

Your Mission: 

While the impacts of air transport on the climate have recently (post-COVID) received particular attention in the research literature, the impacts of climate change on the aviation sector have been studied much less.

The impacts of climate change on aviation are potentially multiple: increased ground and in-flight temperatures, changes in wind patterns, atmospheric humidity, increased frequency of extreme weather phenomena (storms, thunderstorms, hail, etc.), impact on the icing domain, increased turbulence, etc.

The extent of the potential consequences as well as the lack of literature on the subject underlines the importance of studying these phenomena now, in order to identify, quantify and anticipate the associated risks and costs and ultimately to enable the adaptation of air transport.

This is a relatively new subject, with many open questions.

The purpose of this thesis is to focus on the impact of climate change on aircraft performance, with the ultimate goal of estimating the economic impact of operating in a warmer climate and anticipating the need to adjust the design criteria for future aircraft.

The objective of the proposed thesis is to develop a rigorous methodology to quantify the impact of climate change on relevant performance indicators, representative of aircraft operations at the fleet level, with an estimation of the associated confidence level and consideration of various sources of uncertainty (greenhouse gas emission scenarios, structural and parametric uncertainty of climate models, natural variability).

This thesis will be held in collaboration with Cerfacs.

After a preparatory work of literature review and identification of variables of interest, the work will focus on producing relevant climate datasets for aircraft performance analysis, setting up the computational chain, then applying them at the fleet level and synthesizing the results.

Uncertainty analysis and propagation along the entire chain will then be analyzed.

As the successful candidate, you will be able to demonstrate the following skills and competencies: 

  • Research master degree

  • Good knowledge in climate sciences, climate modeling

  • Basic knowledge in flight mechanics, flight operations and aircraft propulsion is a plus 

  • Basic knowledge in uncertainty propagation is a plus 

  • Analysing large amounts of data

  • Python programming skills

  • Rigour and autonomy

  • Advanced level of English

  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills

  • Ability to work in a collective research environment

La mission de l'équipe  Performance en vol et Opérations est de modéliser et d'évaluer les performances opérationnelles de l'avion, d'analyser et de simuler la mission de l'avion et son environnement.

Notre rôle est d' améliorer l'efficacité des avions et des services associés pour toujours répondre aux besoins des nos clients en gardant la sécurité de l’avion.

Votre mission: 

Alors que les impacts du transport aérien sur le climat font récemment (post-COVID) l’objet d’une attention particulière dans la littérature de recherche, les impacts du changement climatique sur le secteur de l’aviation ont été beaucoup moins étudiés.

Les impacts du changement climatique sur l’aviation sont potentiellement multiples : augmentation des températures au sol et en vol, changements des régimes de vent, du taux d’humidité dans l’atmosphère, augmentation de la fréquence des phénomènes météorologiques extrêmes (tempêtes, orages, grêle, etc.), impact sur le domaine de givrage,  augmentation des turbulences, etc.

L’étendue des conséquences potentielles ainsi que le déficit de littérature sur le sujet souligne l’importance d’étudier dès à présent ces phénomènes, afin d'identifier,  quantifier et anticiper les risques et coûts associés et in-fine de permettre l’adaptation du transport aérien.

Il s’agit d’un sujet relativement nouveau, avec de nombreuses questions ouvertes.

L’objet de cette thèse est de se concentrer sur l’impact du changement climatique sur le domaine des performances avion, dans le but de pouvoir in fine estimer l’impact économique lié aux opérations dans un climat plus chaud, et d’anticiper les besoins d'ajustement des critères de conception des futurs avions.


 

L’objectif de la thèse proposée est de développer une méthodologie rigoureuse pour quantifier l’impact du changement climatique sur des indicateurs de performance pertinents, représentatifs des opérations aériennes au niveau d’une flotte complète avec une estimation du niveau de confiance associé et la prise en compte des différentes sources d’incertitude (scénarios d’émission des gaz à effet de serre, incertitude structurelle et paramétrique des modèles de climat, variabilité naturelle). 

Cette thèse sera lancée en collaboration avec le CERFACS. 

Après un travail préparatoire de revue de la littérature et d'identification des variables d'intérêt, le travail se focalisera sur la production de jeux de données climatiques pertinents pour analyse de performance avion, la mise en place de la chaîne de calcul puis l'application au niveau d'une flotte complète et la synthèse des résultats.

L'analyse d'incertitude et la propagation sur toute la chaîne sera analysée par la suite
